Witcher 3 Mini Review Pc
I will keep this review short and sweet. This review will be more about the technical stuff rather than the game story, and most of you PC buyers are concerned about this matter anyway. This game is just simply amazing with eye catching graphics(lighting, grasses, lots of grasses and sharp textures), good driven story, nice music, and unique gameplay mechanics. The combat in this game is really unique from other games, can't just mash the attack button and win fights. You need to be patient, dodge, think your strategy and use everything at the Witcher's disposal in order to win fights.
The game runs like butter, don't listen to some of the guys who are saying "bad pc port" in their reviews. It's quite the opposite and this is evident when you at the game's performance. Anybody remember Watchdogs, AC Unity and GTA 4 releases? Those were "bad pc port" and The Witcher 3 runs nothing like those games. Poor pc ports have a pretty low user rating in metacritic. Witcher 3 currently has a 9.0 user rating in metacritic while a poor port like AC Unity have a 2.6 rating. I am sharing this fact to make it clear - how good of a PC port Witcher 3 really is.
I have purchased a GTX 960 recently from amazon and got the game with it. I have a gtx 960, amd fx 6300 six core cpu and 8gb of ram. I preloaded the game in GOG Galaxy Client two days ago without any issues and played it right at 6PM May 18th(Eastern Time, moment when it was released.). Game launched and has worked properly in the 13 hours I have played so far.
If you are not aware of that some are calling this game a "downgrade". Let me tell it you precisely the story behind it, The Witcher 3 does not look the same as in a demo shown 2 years ago. Some things had to be evolved by CD Red Projekt in the game engine to make it work in the open world environment. Demos far way from a game's release should be never taken for granted. And some changes should be expected. Despite it not looking exactly identical to the two years old demo, in terms of graphics and the game in general, Witcher 3 is one of the best video games ever made. In short, downgrade or not, Witcher 3 is if not the best then one of the best looking PC games ever made. Seriously this game on high/ultra settings look beautiful. Sometimes you may get so amazed that you might take some moments to ponder and appreciate the graphics in this game.
Also, make sure you have downloaded the latest graphics card driver update from nvidia or amd to get the best performance. You can buy this game DRM-Free or on Steam. Really nice of Cd Red Projekt to allow this since no one else does this now days for pc. The GOG Galaxy client is optional and you don’t have to install it if you don’t want it but I installed it to keep track of my playing hours, achievements and for auto updates.
Instructions to download the game, two ways you can do this - one through the optional GOG Galaxy Client or you can directly download the game files from GOG website. Installing through GOG Galaxy client is simple, you download the software and install it, then login, under library you will see your Witcher 3, then just simply click download and it will download and install the game for you. But if you want to download the game files directly from the browser then that is also fairly simple, after you login to GOG.com with your Internet browser hover over Account --> then click library ---> now click on The Witcher 3 and now you will a small window pull up, in blue highlight it says "Try GOG Galaxy" but don't click there and look down, you will see there are about 7 game files + patch files. Just click on them one by one and download each files. Then start the install from your PC by launching part 1 and it will take files from the rest( I recommend that you put all the files one folder before starting the install). Keep in mind that you install patches after you install the game.
I had some time to mess around with the graphics settings. If you Google - “Nvidia witcher 3 guide” and go to the first link then you will see what settings impact performance. Nvidia has done a good guide there. I run the game on High settings for all the settings, all post processing settings on, except a few things like shadow on medium, and hairworks turned off(seriously turn Hairworks off unless it you have Titan X because it kills frame-rate by like 20-30fps). I get 50-60+fps with these settings. Very stable frame-rate. It stays 60+fps always when outside but drops to 50fps minimum in places where there are a lot of houses. And yes this game is optimized and one of the best looking games I have ever played. I play this game with a Xbox 360 controller; it works perfectly and as soon as you move mouse or press in keyboard it changes default controller automatically as most games do. I can tell you that the world is huge and vast, filled with detail and npc characters making funny and smart comments.
Anyway in conclusion, if you buy this game you will really like it if you like RPG games and Open world games. There are plenty of contents for your money. Finally I will end by giving it a score- I will give this masterpiece a score of 9.9/10.
